Cloud Gaming in 2026: What Has Changed

Since we first published this article, a lot has changed. Google Stadia, one of the most ambitious services, shut down on January 18, 2023, and refunded users for their purchases. Xbox Cloud Gaming left beta in 2025, but starting in November 2026, it will have monthly hour limits: 15 on Game Pass Ultimate, 10 on Premium, and 5 on Essential. GeForce NOW now offers RTX 5080 servers on its top plan and officially launched in Mexico in 2024, although since January 2026 its paid plans include 100 hours a month. Here’s where the main services stand:

Other Important Changes

• Xbox Cloud Gaming: Since November 2024, you can stream games you bought outside Game Pass (now more than 1,000), and Ultimate members can play at up to 1440p.
• More devices: Xbox Cloud Gaming now works on Meta Quest 3, Amazon Fire TV, and LG and Samsung TVs; no console needed.
• PlayStation Portal: since November 2025, it lets you play from the cloud without a PS5, with PS Plus Premium (not available in Mexico).
• GeForce NOW: since September 2025, it runs on RTX 5080 servers in the US, and Mexico was the only Latin American country to get them at the same time. It also has apps for Steam Deck and Fire TV.
• Amazon Luna: it relaunched in October 2025 with party games you control with your phone, and in 2026 it stopped selling games and dropped subscriptions like Ubisoft+.
• Netflix: since October 2025, it offers party games on your TV, using your phone as the controller, in select countries.

Will consoles disappear?

While cloud gaming may look like a threat to consoles, everything so far suggests it will complement them, not replace them. Even Microsoft, which has bet on the cloud for years, started limiting Xbox Cloud Gaming hours in 2026 because running the servers is expensive.

If cloud gaming were meant to completely replace consoles, we are still far from that point. Cloud gaming also has limitations beyond the costs mentioned, including the need for a fast, stable internet connection. Also, the console market is always changing, making it hard to know how it will change in the coming years.

Latency

Latency is one of the most critical factors in cloud gaming, since it depends on how fast your internet is. Many don’t recommend playing multiplayer games on cloud services because of the frustrating latency you can experience. Depending on your internet, you can expect decent, poor, or even acceptable results.

In single-player games, cloud gaming can provide an experience very close to native hardware, which is why the service is currently popular. It is worth noting that some games are more sensitive to latency than others: games like first-person shooters, fighting games, and sports games require low latency for optimal gameplay (competitive games in general).

Carlos, from our team, put this to the test with Xbox Cloud Gaming on an Xbox Series X and a 500 Mbps fiber connection: he noticed no lag in Resident Evil 2 or Gears of War: E-Day, but he did in Halo Infinite multiplayer. On handheld consoles connected over Wi-Fi, he had a few connection drops, which went away once he connected by cable with a USB-C to Ethernet adapter. When he tried multiplayer again more recently, the result was acceptable.

So, is cloud gaming worth it?

Whether cloud gaming is worth it or not depends on several factors, such as the player’s internet connection, the cost of the service, and the availability of the games they want to play. Also, if you don’t have a console or a powerful enough PC to enjoy some of the latest games, it is definitely worth it, as long as you have a stable enough connection.

Advantages:

• There is no need for a powerful console or computer: It allows players to access high-end games on devices that may not have the required hardware to run them.
• Easy access to a wide library of games: Many services offer access to a wide library of games for a monthly fee.
• Possibility of playing anywhere: You can access it from multiple devices, including smartphones and tablets, allowing players to play wherever they are.
• You save storage space: you don’t have to download or install games on your console, PC or handheld, so you no longer need to delete some games to make room for others.

Disadvantages:

• High internet connection requirements: It requires a fast and stable internet connection, which may not be available or affordable for some players.
• Latency issues: As mentioned, high latency can hurt the gaming experience and make some games unplayable.
• Cost: Many services require a monthly fee, and some games may require additional purchases, which can be more expensive than buying the game or console.
• Hour limits: Services like Xbox Cloud Gaming and GeForce NOW now cap how many hours you can play each month, and extra hours are paid separately.
• Availability by country: Not every service is available everywhere; for example, Amazon Luna and PlayStation Plus Premium streaming aren’t available in Mexico.
